Many service members and their families have made sacrifices to protect the democratic values that we in the United States hold sacred. Therefore, we must provide services and opportunities in an effort to give back some of what they have lost. As a result, I am pleased that the City of Houston, the Voice of Veterans (VOV) Committee for District B, Houston Veteran Administration, Texas Southern University, University of Houston Veterans Affairs, Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County, Inc. and the Department of Veteran Affairs Center for Minority Veterans have joined together to invite you, to participate in the Veteran’s Benefit Seminar.

We are reaching out to all veterans in need of information as well as resources that will enable them to live and enjoy a better life. Please come and learn about the many community services, educational interest and entrepreneurial opportunities that are available for veterans. THIS SEMINAR IS FREE.

The goal of the event is to foster an atmosphere to network and share information with stakeholders within local, state and federal governments as well as establishing partnerships with resources within the City of Houston.

Council Member Jarvis Johnson hosted a free two-day Job Fair Conference January 29 - 30 at the Fifth Ward Multi-Purpose Center.

“In good times and in bad times, our community always faces challenges in trying to find a good paying job. I hope that this will help alleviate this issue,” said Johnson.

The Friday "Get Hired" workshop focused on job interviewing skills, proper work attire ,customer service tips and application tips. The fair was hosted on Saturday.

It is with great sadness that I send this message. At this moment, thousands of our neighbors in Haiti are without shelter, searching for family and friends, and dealing with the emotional pains of a natural disaster. My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Haiti. I support President Obama as the United States provides “swift, coordinated, and aggressive efforts to save lives” and to restore Haiti.

We in Houston are familiar with a natural disaster as we experienced Hurricane Ike in 2008. We opened our arms to our neighbors from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. We know what it feels like to lose shelter, access to energy resources, to be in need of food, water, and ice. We know what it feels like to be in despair. Just like we know the impacts of devastation, we also know the power of hope and prayer. So, during this time of tragedy for our Haitian neighbors, I am urging us to change our focus from our daily routines to reach out to our fellow human beings in Haiti. At this time the extent of the damage from the earthquake has not been fully measured, but reports are saying that thousands have died and that most of Port-au-Prince is destroyed.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reminded us that “all life is interrelated. The agony of the poor impoverishes the rich…. Whatever affects one, directly affects all indirectly.”

Yes, we are in tough economic times in Houston and across this nation, but we also have more resources than the people in Haiti and a more developed infrastructure. Our financial woes can’t compare to the financial hardship and devastation of our neighbors in Haiti. I am therefore asking for your full support.

The people in Haiti need our thoughts and prayers. They need our financial and physical support. Please help today by contributing funds to one of the relief efforts below:

On Tuesday, January 5, Houston City Council Member Jarvis Johnson stood outside the historic George "Mickey" Leland building to announce that he is officially running for Houston's 18th Congressional District seat.

“We're going to have a frank discussion on who's capable of bringing and creating good-paying jobs for the people of the district,” said Council Member Johnson, who was joined by a host of supporters who stood behind him as he delivered his message to the local press.

In his statement, Council Member Johnson also noted the dismal unemployment and school dropout rates in the 18th District and declared "I have the energy. I have the youthful exuberance. I have the legs and the strong back to get out there and get the word out about what our campaign and candidacy is all about."

Council Member Johnson took the oath of office for his third term in City Council on January 4 and on that same day he went to the headquarters of the Harris County Democratic Party, where he filed to become a contender in the March 2 Democratic primary.

Houston, Texas ---Council Member Jarvis Johnson will join community members in demanding safer housing for area renters. A press conference will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 11:00am with Sharon Kendrick - the latest victim of a negligent property owner.

Two days after Christmas, Sharon Kendrick rushed from her home to escape flames seeping through her walls. Though the home she has rented for years didn't completely burn, she is now without permanent shelter and some belongings. Her despair is the result of a negligent property owner.

Council Member Johnson will speak on his proposed regulations to hold property owners more accountable at the press conference in front of Ms. Kendrick’s home located at 2321 Kirk Street, Houston, Texas 77020. All media is invited.

"This ordinance is a practical and common sense way to hold property owners accountable, and to prevent low-income people from becoming homeless," says Council Member Johnson.

Council Member Johnson has spent his tenure on Houston City Council advocating for stronger ordinances to hold landlords and property owners accountable for ensuring their properties pose no threat to its residents.

Part of the proposed Single Family Properties, Restricted Covenants, & Habitual Ordinances demands that landlords will have 48 hours to fix problems that Building and Safety Department inspectors believe are serious enough to threaten public safety.

"It is shameful that a property owner would willingly take the hard-earned money of its residents with no regard to the individual or family's safety,” says Council Member Johnson.

After having severe rain fall cancel his annual Winter Wonderland set for December 17, Council Member Jarvis Johnson took it as a sign that he didn't need a big event to impact constituents this holiday season.

So he personally visited schools, senior citizen homes and residents in District-B to deliver gifts and food for those in need.

But one incident in particular touched him immensely.

Christina Sanchez, a single mother of four, had her holiday season crushed on Monday (Dec. 22) when she came home to find that thieves had broken in. Not only did they steal her television and destroy her property but they took all of her children's Christmas gifts and even the food for her specially planned holiday meal.

Council Member Johnson delivered holiday cheer to her on the morning of December 24, Christmas Eve.

"I have been struggling financially, so this was truly heartbreaking to have them steal gifts and our food. I did not know what I was going to do," says Ms. Sanchez. "I was so happy to hear from Council Member Johnson. I am so grateful for what he is going to for my family. My children will now have gifts and a meal on Christmas Day."

Ms. Sanchez's added that her four children Keara (10yrs), Rashonda (5yrs), Andrew (4yrs), and Andrea (4yrs) will now "have a brighter Christmas."

"This is what this season is all about. Giving to those who are less fortunate or experiencing misfortunes. I am happy to help Ms. Sanchez and others," says Council Member Johnson.

This was all a part of the Council Member's Random Acts of Kindness Tour throughout District B this week to brighten the holiday season for children, families, and senior citizens.

The severe rain on Thursday, December 17 caused Council member Johnson to cancel his annual Winter Wonderland in honor of students showing high academic improvement.

But that did not stop him from making sure Houston children received their deserving gifts.

On the morning of Friday, December 18, Council member Johnson dropped by Precious Moments Academy on Homestead Road in Northeast Houston. He handed out gifts to every child plus a single mother of three.

"That was very wonderful what Council member Johnson did today," said Litha Jones, Assistant Director of Precious Memories. "It is very important to reward our children for doing good because it let's them know they are on the right path."

Councilmember Jarvis Johnson stands with 5th Ward residents in battle with HISD

Homeowners in Fifth Ward are speaking out against Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) plan to use eminent domain to acquire their properties situated next to Dogan Elementary School.

HISD wants to expand the school but has yet to give clear information according to Council member Jarvis Johnson, who held a press conference on Sunday, October 11, 2009 in front of the home of 86-year-old Elizabeth Williams.

“These residents deserve some answers. There seems to be a lot of ambiguity and a lot of uncertainty,” said Council member Johnson.

"There is nobody standing here who is against expanding educational opportunities for our children but some questions need to be answered," he said.

HISD sent out certified letters informing residents they had 14 days to accept their offer. This did not sit well with Ms. Williams, who has resided in her home for sixty years.

"I got a short letter in the a mail saying they'll give me 14 days to accept the offer and I said, 'That's not a lot of time'," she told the media inside her home.

"I have been so depressed and sad,” said Ms. Williams, who is one of the 11 homeowners being targeted by HISD.

"So we are asking what is the plan for Dogan Elementary and for this particular community, so we may move forward, so that our community will have a better understanding of what's going on," said Council Member Johnson.

According to many of the residents, they are being offered unfair prices by HISD. The district has even used strong-arm tactics by sending an appraiser into the neighborhood with a police escort, according to Council member Johnson.

"The district would never use these types of “gangster-style moves” in River Oaks,” stated community activist Deric Muhammad.

Resident Emily Peterson owns four properties and says she is being offered $30,000 less than the appraised value.

"My home is full of memories. I don't mind selling my home but I want more money. I want what it is worth,” expressed Mrs. Peterson.

Reuben Holms, a resident of the area for sixty-five years, sees the moves being made by HISD as the infant stages of an ultimate plan to "hand this area over to the rich and build high-rises because it's close to downtown."

“The Fifth Ward is not a settlement. This is a dignified, historical community. The superintendent needs to come and talk to these residents or we will bring Fifth Ward to your office,” declared Mr. Muhammad.

SLAIN MAN’S FAMILY PUTS UP ADDITIONAL $20,000 REWARD TO FIND HIS MURDERER(S)

Activists, Family, Friends, Local Residents and Elected Officials Gather for Candlelight Vigil

Houston, Tx: Over 200 people have confirmed to attend when a local family announces that it has personally put up a $20,000 reward for anyone who can give information leading to the arrest of the party(s) responsible for the death of Marcus Washington.

Washington, a 35 year old Halliburton employee who was only a few months away from receiving a Masters Degree from the University of Houston, was found in his apartment shot to death on July 3rd.

He had been given the day off by Halliburton to celebrate Independence Day. An eyewitness claimed she saw 3 young males outside Washington’s apartment shortly before it is believed he was murdered. Authorities have yet to arrest any suspects.

Tonight, Sunday Oct. 11th, activist Deric Muhammad, Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson and hundreds of others will stand with the Washington family in a call for residents in the area to speak up if they have any information.

Area residents have seen a huge spike in crime in the area and believe Washington may have been a victim of a random robbery “gone bad”. Activists are not satisfied with the apparent slowness of the Washington investigation and are calling on the community to get involved.

“We should not be afraid of what will happen if we come forward with information leading to the arrest of the real culprits”, said Muhammad. We should be afraid of what will happen if we don’t.”

The Washington family has circulated hundreds of flyers in an effort to gather information. Several people have come forwarded, but no one has been arrested. Now they have taken their journey for justice to the next level by raising the reward ante’ by $20,000. The funds have already been registered with Crimestoppers.

The brutal beating death of 14 year-old honor roll student Derrion Albert in Chicago has sparked a nationwide sense of urgency to stop the senseless killing in the Black community. The murder of Marcus Washington is but one local example of a nationwide problem. We must wage war against the violence that takes the lives of innocent human beings like Washington.

Regarding the HISD Property Acquisition for property surrounding Dogan Elementary School

Houston, Texas--Council Member Jarvis Johnson is very concerned about the manner in which his constituency, particularly senior citizens, is being treated by HISD regarding their plans for expansion that will directly impact homeowners in that area.

Councilmember Johnson will be joined by residents, community activists and others for an emergency press conference to clearly state his stance on this serious issue. Residents will also speak out.

“I have seniors contacting my office who were not notified until an HISD contractor showed up at their door with an offer to purchase their home.” says Council Member Johnson. “This is a very terrifying thing for seniors who have been in their homes for over 60 years.”

The Press Conference will take place Sunday, October 11 at the corner of Quitman St. and Leffingwell St, just south of Dogan Elementary. Press conference will start at 2:00pm. All media is invited to attend.

Many feel HISD has failed to do a good job of communicating with all homeowners including those that may not be able to leave their homes. The failure to communicate has increased the number of constituent complaints that Council Member Johnson’s office has received.

Why is the combination of two schools with low enrollment necessitating an expansion of Dogan Elementary School? Council member Johnson believes that the homeowners deserve more explanation and better treatment.

A Message to Acres Homes and the City of Houston: Stay Vigilant!

Council member Johnson and a coalition of community leaders, including activist Deric Muhammad, held a press conference in response to the possible apprehension of a suspect in a string of Acres Homes sexual murders and assaults. The council member warned the residents to "stay vigilant and do not let your guard down. Continue to practice safety measures to avoid being a victim."

As a Council Member I have always been concerned with the amount of opportunities that are not being given to our small and minority businesses. I have seen a great deal of contracts that have been brought before City Council that have not met their MWBE participation goals and because the general contractor has not met the goals instead of ensuring they are obtained, they request that the goal itself be changed to a 0% goal.

In today’s difficult economic times it is very important that we encourage economic stability through job creation and business opportunities for our chief employers small and minority business. Did you know that small Businesses employ just over half of the country’s private sector workforce and hire 40 percent of high tech workers, such as scientists, engineers and computer workers, this number includes 52 percent home-based businesses and two percent franchises, they represent 97.3 percent of all the exporters of goods, represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms and generate a majority of the innovations that come from United States companies.

When we fail to give opportunities for small and minority businesses to contract with the fourth largest city in this nation, we are not doing our job as elected officials to ensure that we lead in job creation. There are 1,787,607 small businesses in Texas, 399,323 have employees. The remaining 1,388,284 are Texas small businesses that have no employees. On August 5th before the approval of the Bombardier Transportation contract, I spoke during council session regarding this grave injustice of the O% goals and/or the lack of unbundled contracts. At that time the Mayor stated that he agreed with my concerns and joined with my office in requesting an unbundling of contracts. I received a commitment from the Houston Airport Systems (HAS) to begin an unbundling program.

While I accepted this commitment with great skeptism in light of the amount of times I had heard this promise in the past, I still entered into an understanding with HAS in good faith. One month later we are in the same place we were on August 5, 2009. We now have Agenda Item 32, which is a JOC contract worth nine million that offers great contracting opportunities for our SBE and MWBE’s to become prime contractors HAS, that will not overburden or over commit and will create capacity and experience. In the past the main excuse that I have hear from HAS is that the SBE & MWBE’s did not bid, now four out of the six bidding vendors for this contract were SBE/MWBE’s

I am insisting that HAS spilt this contract into three or more additional contracts to ensure more participation of SBE/MWBE. I have received no evidence that this contract cannot be split. We have an inherent problem with allowing and encouraging sub-standard SBE/MWBE participation among our Prime Contractors and not creating more opportunities for our sub contractors to become prime. We cannot continue to count on the promise of better cooperation from these companies.

The recent arrest of an individual reported to “possibly” have been responsible for a series of sexual assault/murders in the Acres Homes area is comforting. A wide coalition of organizations, elected officials, activists and residents have waited for years to find out what sick soul was responsible for such heinous crimes, terrorizing an entire community in the process. While we are awaiting DNA evidence to conclusively link this individual to these murders we want to send a strong message to the community of Acres Homes and the city of Houston in general, “DO NOT LET YOUR GUARD DOWN.”

A coalition of organizations will unite with Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson to walk the neighborhoods in Acres Homes in an effort to send a message that the “THREAT LEVEL” must remain at its height to prevent further victimization. We plan to pass out flyers containing information and instructions on how to “REMAIN VIGILANT” to protect women and young girls in the community. We must be certain that our community is not being misled in the name of “solving the infamous Acres Homes murders.” Please join us in sending this very important message.

As the country prepares to observe National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery month in September, one expert observed that “drugs and alcohol abuse is America’s number one health problem, the number one crime problem, the number one homeless problem, the number one youth problem, including youth violence”.

The issue of drugs throughout the city and lack of effective wholistic drug reform has prompted Councilmember Jarvis Johnson to partner with many in hosting the first of its kind “Families Aiding In Total Healing -Solving Together Every Problem” (FAITH-STEP) two-day drug prevention/drug free recovery conference to be held September 17-18, 2009 at Texas Southern University.

Councilmember Johnson unveiled details of this solution-oriented conference at the Official Press Conference on Friday, August 28, 2009 on the steps of TSU Granville Sawyer Auditorium (3100 Cleburne).

“We must recognize just about everyone's family is affected and afflicted by alcohol and drug abuse and the user is getting younger”, said Councilmember Johnson. “This conference will be a wholistic approach to help families the solution to the growing problem of substance abuse.”

The press conference also featured TSU President John Rudley, Conference Co-host Mrs. Cleo Glenn Johnson-McLaughlin, Rev. James McLaughlin, community activist Deric Muhammad, Mavis Jackson (LCDC,CART), Atty. Michael Harris, Janice Paul of the City of Houston Health & human Services Dept, TSU Provost James Douglass, and more.

On Tuesday, August 18, Councilmember Johnson hosted another awesome segment of "Hot Topics" on the Houston Media Source Television Channel 17.

This segment was centered around women entrepreneurs and featured special guests Tracy Taylor Smith, Laura Alvarado, Lauren Williams and Carla Lane.

The show stemmed from the success of the One Woman™ National Business Conference hosted by the Texas Business Alliance (TBA) on August 6-8 in Houston. The three-day event drew over 500 attendees and offered tools for women seeking to do for self in this tough economy.

We must begin a new era at City Hall it is simply unacceptable to continue the status Quo. Small Business produces ninety percent of the new jobs in the nation today. In spite of this fact, the City of Houston is still not utilizing the contractual opportunities that they have to work at its true capacity. Contract after contract the same scenario happens the city extends an old contract and keeps the old contractor without employing the RFP process and creating new contractual opportunities for small and minority business owners.

During the August 12 Council Session the meeting was brought to a halt as I voiced my displeasure with the manner in which the City of Houston has been utilizing old contractors and not creating new contracting opportunities for small and minority & women owned businesses.

I said to the Mayor and my fellow Council Members “I do not understand how we can just label a company a Sole Source Purchaser and claim that they do not have to purchase any parts from someone other than themselves. We have an opportunity to work at our true capacity as a major contracting agency”.

Why are we extending contracts if the contractors have not complied with all the terms of the contract. Many of these Prime Contractors have previously agreed to achieve the MWBE participation goal as a tem of their contract. Yet well after the contract is completed they have not fulfilled that commitment.

We must ensure that every term is met in order to ensure fairness and transparency for all companies seeking to do business with the City of Houston. As a City Council Member I can no longer sit idly by and do nothing. I will vote my conscious.

In one of the front cover stories of the July 9, 2009 edition of the Houston Chronicle newspaper, Council Member Jarvis Johnson is quoted in an article regarding the escalating issue of racism being exposed in the Houston Fire Department.

“An isolated incident is one isolated incident, but when an isolated incident becomes a pattern, you may have an inherent problem in the department,” said Councilman Jarvis Johnson to the Houston Chronicle.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Council member Johnson has also called for a citywide zero-tolerance policy on racism.

On July 1, Houstonians from across the city came together on the outer skirts of downtown for a Tweet Up. Yes, a Tweet Up! Sounds strange, right? Well, if you are not one of the millions of Twitter users around the world, it would sound strange! (smile)

But a Tweet Up (like 'Meet Up') is hosted for Twitter users to come together face to face offline to share, grow and learn from one another. To hear about the opportunities to connect with one another beyond 140 characters. But it's also for those who don't know anything about Twitter.

The Tweet Up was the brainchild of Michelle Price (@prosperitygal) who brought on board a team that included Garrett Maddox (@FinancialCents), Jennifer Haubein (@jhaubein) and myself! (@brotherjesse).

The theme of this Tweet Up was "Tweet For Our Troops" in order to show support for those who have husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, or children in the armed forces. Attendees donated to the purchase MRE (meal ready to eat) that will be shipped to troops in Iraq.

Michelle did a great presentation about the power of Twitter and helped people set up accounts the same night. People shared business cards, dialogued about their ventures, enjoyed food and music. Council member Jarvis Johnson (@jarvisjohnson) helped to sponsor the event and shared a few words. Food was provided by Beaucoup Bar & Grill and music courtesy of DJ CrazyDredz, a hip-hop radio show host for KTSU.

Thousands of dollars in door prizes was donated by Bille Baty, Donnie Moreland, John Morgan, and James Dutton. Everyone walked away with something!

Councilmember Johnson makes statement regarding Houston Firefighters noose incident

"The noose is a symbol of Hatred that reflects a very painful time in this country’s past. I am sure that you are aware of this history. I am very disappointed that the action of one firefighter has created such a negative reflection of our first responders. I do not agree with how this situation was handled, I believe the reprimand to be insufficient to address the wrong that was done by Captain Smith. The City of Houston Firefighters must ensure that every member of the Department feels safe from being racially intimidated."

"There is one thing that we can never take back; a lost opportunity. This Department now has an opportunity to utilize this incident to show the Fire Department’s commitment to ensuring there is no hatred shown behind the shield. We must salvage what we can in using these incidents to correctly address incidents like this in the future. We must institute a Zero Tolerance regarding racial symbols, slurs and gestures. I am extremely concerned that the light discipline of Captain Smith has sent the wrong message to other firefighters who may be inclined to use these methods to intimidate men of color."

Press Statement From Houston Councilmember Jarvis Johnson Regarding Brock Park

HOUSTON, Texas— The Amendment as proposed to me was to be a detailed study of all City of Houston Parks for the purpose of reviewing revenues. I was at no time consulted regarding the closure of Brock Park either directly or indirectly as a result of this survey. To the contrary I have been very supportive of Parks that provide not only environmental health but an aid to our children and all the constituents of District B. I believe this administration has shown a commitment to Parks and Recreation within the City of Houston. Brock Park has been in existence in my District since 1952 as the first golf course to be managed by the City of Houston. It is very important to my constituents and therefore very important to me.

I would like to make it clear that I am not in support of the closing of Brock Park and will never be!! Brock Park Golf Course serves as an attractive centerpiece to spur good sustainable housing development that will encourage commercial development. All this coupled together brings the northeast side of town into a new era of revitalization which enhances the quality of life for all of its residents. As a Council Member of District B I am the voice for my constituents at City Hall, I hold it as one of my most sacred duties as a public servant. I am always supportive of research to the study proposed yesterday during the presentation of Budget Amendments, no matter how displaced it was.

In the future I would encourage anyone who would like to take part in something that may adversely affect a community and specifically the constituents of District B to consult with me, speak to the community; We cannot be so irresponsible do not blindly act without getting the input from the community.

“It is always important to me as a city official to listen to the concerns and ideas of my constituents,” said Councilmember Johnson. “The goal is to support and empower residents to take responsibility in building up their own neighborhoods. Brock Park is much more then a Golf Course to my constituents. I will not sit idly by and allow it be destroyed.

Dr. King once said, “In the end it is not the words of your enemy that you will remember most in life but rather it is the silence of your friends.” With this sentiment in mind I can not sit idly by and allow my voice to be silent. With an industry that has done so much for the African American Community, I must do all I can to tell my colleagues in the Unites States Congress the great importance behind African American radio stations. African American Radio Stations have been around since 1949. Mr. Jesse B Blayton Sr. started the first minority radio station in Atlanta, Georgia.

Minority and small radio stations play an intricate part in the lives of millions of constituents throughout the City of Houston and nationwide. In today’s times of economic uncertainty, these stations serve as not only an information center for millions; they also employ hundreds of people and help generate a base for entertainers everywhere.

The commentaries that they provide during their broadcast are ones that are always centered around the affect of current events on minority communities. They serve as a galvanizing center for minority communities nationwide and their affect is felt throughout the world. It is my sincere desire that all elected officials would protect the voice of these radio stations, by not just reviewing the words of this bill, but the effect of the Bill’s application would have on the minority community. The obligation of every elected official is to represent the people. Over past few days the people have spoken.

On Saturday, May 16, 2009 starting at 8:00 a.m., Dr. Reagan Flowers, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of CSTEM Teacher & Student Support Services, will host the 2009 CSTEM Sea Turtle Robotics Challenge at the George R. Brown Convention Center located at 1001 Avenida De Las Americas in Houston, Texas.

The theme for the challenge is 'Everyone is an Artist and an Engineer' and is free to the public.

"I would like to congratulate CSTEM on its success and render my full support of the Sea
Turtle Robotics Challenge", said Houston City Councilmember Jarvis Johnson. "Together we can make a difference in how our children are learning in the classroom and teacher preparation through our continuing partnership and support of each other."

The 2009 Challenge will include 63 schools from 5 districts featuring robots, sculptures, murals, Geographical Information Systems reports, creative writing submissions, and web design entries presented by multiple feeder patterns. This challenge is a unique and innovative learning-based competition that combines the three levels of basic education into one project while engaging students in the disciplines of communications, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr. Reagan Flowers stated, "This year's Sea Turtle Challenge is by all indications our largest and most-attended to date. With over 1000 students and upwards of 63 schools from throughout the greater Houston region participating, we are positioned to successfully introduce the disciplines of communications, science, technology engineering and mathematics (CSTEM) to those students while also closing the achievement gaps in Pre K - 12th grade."

On the Move: Councilmember Johnson addresses the issue of abandoned properties in District B.

Joined by neighborhood and other civic leaders on May 11, Council member Johnson introduced his plan to address vacant property in District B and to combat crime and vandalism to these properties.

Responsibility Is A Lifestyle: Give Back Your Gun Day

T.I. and the K.I.N.G. Foundation are partnering with Councilmember Jarvis Johnson, the Political Swagger Foundation and the C.H.A.N.G.E. Initiative in a call to service to engage elected officials, community organizers, artists, and every American citizen to accept responsibility to build safer communities.

In an effort to take guns off the streets of Houston, TX, the Grammy award winner, T.I. and his, K.I.N.G. Foundation are hosting the Responsibility Is A Lifestyle: Give Back Your Gun Day on Saturday, March 14, 2009. Anyone with an unregistered weapon will be allowed to drop it off without penalty at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 3015 North MacGregor Way, beginning at 11am; then join T.I. for a community rally at Texas Southern University.

“Instead of walking with guns, I now have to walk with God”, says T.I. The Responsibility Is A Lifestyle: Give Back Your Gun Day is being organized by the Political Swagger Foundation and The CHANGE Initiative with T.I.’s K.I.N.G. Foundation.

According to a recent study released by Northeastern University, between 2002 and 2007, the number of black male juveniles murdered nationally increased by 31 percent and the number of black perpetrators by 43 percent. The increases were even greater, the report said, when guns were used as weapons.

Focusing on the period between 2000-01 and 2006-07, the study found Houston at the top of a list of 28 U.S. cities, with a 139 percent increase in the number of young African-Americans suspected in killings. (*Houston Chronicle)

“Every era of great change has had its music and the artists have always been at the forefront of that change; from John Lennon to Marvin Gaye. Today, T.I. is using his influence to affect change and we’re excited to join him. The responsibility is on us,” said Tonja Styles, Founder of The Political Swagger Foundation.

Co-Founder of the CHANGE Initiative and recording artist, Radiant Amar, learned first hand of the impact of gun violence; when he was involved in a shoot-out at age 14. He spent nearly two years in the Houston Juvenile Detention Center and the Texas Youth Commission because of his crime. “When you pick up a gun all roads lead to an end. When you put it down, that will prove to be your best beginning,” said Radiant.

Other community partners include Texas Southern University,Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Radio-One 97.9 The Box, Houston Police Department, ENOTA Project, Jahaanah Productions, Mobile Regime, Houston NAACP, Millions More Movement Ministry of Justice, and more.

How is your exercising going so far this year? You know we have alot of work to do this year in our neighborhoods, so our bodies have to be able to keep up with this non-stop pace!

I just wanted to let you all know how my fitness progress is going. I am happy to announce that I have lost 7lbs...that's right, it is not a typo! We are bringing sexy back to District B(smile) and I'm going to lead by example.

Have you been out to the Fonde Recreation Center with me yet? What are you waiting for? I need as many workout partners as I can get so I hope you can come by on Monday or Thursday.

Lastly, I have started taking Yoga classes to add to my fitness schedule. I'm winning my body back and I hope you are too. I will let you know next time what I have learned from taking Yoga.

Alicia's Diary: B-Healthy Challenge Update

Hi District B,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been making progress with my fitness goals and I am determined to complete this challenge set forth by Council member Johnson.

To show you just how serious I am, I wanted to share with you all an experience I had on Saturday, February 9 with my children and other family members on some farmland.

I decided that I wanted to ride a horse that day because I know that is a good workout for the legs, burns calories and overall can be a good outdoor exercise for anyone. Well, unfortunately the saddle was not on tight enough and I actually fell off of the horse! Yes, fell completely off! Boy what an experience for me. Not only did I hurt my hip a little but I sprained by wrist. So I am wearing a wrap until it heals.

This may delay a few of my workout plans for the week but it won't stop me from finding alternatives and continuing to eat right. That's what life is all about...overcoming challenges.

The Spirit of Unity: Let's Roll Up Our Sleeves

At this most difficult and trying time in our nation, the "Spirit of Unity" is one of the key themes our new president has continuously reiterated-on the campaign trail and now from the oval office. When the house is on fire it doesn't matter what color, political affiliation or religion you adhere to; the only thing that matters is who has the bucket of water!

Our new president has said in so many respects, I will work with who ever is willing to bring their bucket to the table to extinguish the house fire, not just a room in the house. Partisan bickering has no place in the halls of power when our nation is facing bankruptcy, consumers are losing their homes, businesses are failing and unemployment is sky rocketing, especially in the African American community.

What does all this mean for the neighborhoods I serve? As the president has shown us through his community organizing background, leadership must come from the grass roots level as well as the echelons of mahogany congressional suites. As civic leaders, we must put aside petty differences, roll up our sleeves and get to work in our communities. When we work together as a cohesive unit, in spite of our differences, we engage in a process called "operational unity". The human anatomy is the best example of how operational unity works. The body consist of operational units called organs-heart, lungs, liver etc. Each organ very different and serve a different function; however they work in concert with one another to give the body life.

Many of us come from different backgrounds and have different talents but we must learn how to work together with unity of purpose for the betterment of our community. As your Houston City Council Member, I am making a clarion call for community leaders to put aside petty differences, roll up your sleeves and let's get to work in 2009 to improve the quality of life in the community you call home.

District B’s “Team Up to Clean Up” Community Partnership!

The “Team Up to Clean Up” community initiative is a collaborative effort among community churches, civic clubs, government and businesses to implement and execute an integrated civic engagement agenda focusing on public health and public safety issues.

Project “Team Up to Clean Up” will be executed using the following three guiding principals: 1. Community Involvement 2. Reducing Neighborhood blight 3. Reducing Crime

Community Involvement
Objective: Organize a sustainable network of community stakeholders to address public safety and public health issues in District B.

Tactic(s):
1. Monthly combined stakeholder meetings to address specific concerns within a specified geographical boundary.
2. Churches should be responsible for at least a 3-block radius surrounding their church
3. Civic leadership training with the City of Houston’s Planning Department will be available for stakeholder leadership.
4. In addition to consistent physical stakeholder meetings, the Internet can be used to increase communication among key stakeholder leadership.

Reducing Neighborhood Blight
Objective: Significantly reduce dangerous abandoned buildings, weeded lots, junk motor vehicles and graffiti in neighborhoods in District B.

Tactic(s):
1. Reduce the number of abandoned buildings.

• Policy Changes: The state law that limits how many abandoned buildings a municipality can demolish must be amended or repealed.

• The City of Houston should initiate special operation initiatives to target areas with a concentration of dangerous buildings.

• Negligent owners must be held accountable. An aggressive effort should be coordinated with Linebarger to find negligent owners. Their names should be published in the newspaper for being negligent property owners.

• Utilize LARA to acquire more tax delinquent property for development.

2. Reduce the number of weeded lots

• Coordinated community clean-ups with stakeholders, probationers and city departments
• Adopt a lot(s) program with local churches

Reducing Crime
Objective: Significantly reduce bodily and property crimes in low-income neighborhoods in District B.

Tactic(s):

1. Stakeholders should partner with multiple law enforcement agencies to develop a Citizen on Patrol (COP) network in their neighborhood. Reduced crime stats support the effectiveness of such programs.
2. Neighborhood Watch programs
3. Surveillance web cams so stakeholders who live in the community can monitor high crime areas in real time. (Ask business in the area to sponsor)

Proposed Sweat Equity Program
Objective: To create an incentive for adjacent property owners and community-based organizations to abate weeded lots and abandoned buildings.

Tactics(s)

1. As a municipality propose state law changes to give the City of Houston the power via ordinance to place foreclosable liens on properties with multiple unabated weeded lot violations.
2. Adjacent property owners should have “First Right of Refusal” and their Sweat Equity should be discounted from the purchase price of said lot.
3. Provide contracting opportunities for community-based organizations (CBO) to abate properties. This will allow CBO’s to hire people that live in the community to take care of neglected property.

My Inauguration Experience: "Embrace Your Greatness"

Dear Constituents:

On January 20, 2009, an historic moment took place in our country that has ushered in a new era of change.

Barack H. Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States and the country's first African-American Commander-in-Chief.

I witness this with my family. We first arrived in Philadelphia, a city in which I learned a lot of history. It is a city that acknowledges slavery and so it served as an opportunity for me to teach my children. We visited the home of one of the former Presidents and also Constitutional Hall.

While in D.C., it was just amazing to see so many people from so many different backgrounds on the Washington Mall. People had a look of rejuvenation in their eyes. Seeing Obama sworn in made me reflect on how much we have to do in our communities.

I was reading in the USA Today and hip-hop artist David Banner was quoted saying "Just seeing Barack (Obama) inaugurated made me want to be a better father and man". If we all could take on that attitude we would do even greater things.

Let's start talking and promoting the greatness of our culture. Embrace your greatness. I know there are negative things that surround us but we won't make progress if we just keep talking about the problems. We have to be solution-oriented. Embrace the positive things of life that we may show our children something of substance to counter the negative images that they are being bombarded with everyday. What role will you play?

What a wonderful and glorious day it was. God is good and has shown us that when we put Him first and differences aside, the glory we can experience. Let us relish in the dawn of a new day but also be mindful that much work is still needed to be done.

Take time to talk with your children or a student and let them know of the sacrifices of those that came before us to make Jan. 20th possible. And it is now their responsibility to charge forward and carry the torch. Let us take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that are before us to teach and learn.

Let's enjoy this historic moment and accept our responsibilities.

Hey District B:

Just wanted to update you on my progress. I have been getting more exercise. I even walked to my grandmother's house one Sunday afternoon instead of calling for a ride.

I have been eating fruit instead of candy when I want something sweet and have cut back my soda intake to 3 a week ( it was about 3 a day before ). I went shopping the other night and was able to buy pants 1 size smaller.

I'm still working on it. Hope you are too.

Our “B” Healthy Initiative plan includes eating healthier which includes more fresh fruits and vegetables, meditating and breathing exercise to help the flow of oxygen to the brain and lungs and physical exercise.

This will be primarily centered around 3 on 3 or 5 on 5 basketball. If b-ball is not your thing, there are weights and tread mills there to keep you active.

We have reserved the recreation center from 12:30pm to 1:30pm on those days.

The goal is simple, to get our heart rates up and our stress levels down. It is also a great way to simply build relationships.
